In the In-Between: 5 Ways to Navigate Change with Confidence

Have you ever known you were ready for something new but weren’t sure how to get there?

Maybe you’re starting your coaching business, changing direction, or feeling called toward something you can’t quite name yet.

Welcome to the liminal space — that place between what was and what comes next.

I’m there myself as I bring my podcast and writing to Substack through Soul Driven with Kat Knecht. I know how to write, coach, and create meaningful conversations. Now I’m learning how to bring those strengths into a new setting.

Here are five things that help me move through the in-between.

1. Push Away from the Shore

Imagine sitting in a boat, looking across the water toward somewhere you want to go. You can see the possibility, but you’re still holding on to the shore.

At some point, you have to let go.

You don’t need every detail figured out. You do need to decide: I’m doing this.

What familiar thing are you ready to release so you can move forward?

2. Act As If

Years ago, I was terrified of public speaking. But I wanted to share my ideas, so I decided to practice acting as if I could handle it.

At a Postal Service training with about 100 people, I volunteered to present our team’s work. My heart was pounding, but I got up and did it.

Months later, I was offered an assignment giving presentations throughout the district. Someone had seen me speak that day and recommended me!

I had felt nervous. They had seen someone capable.

Sometimes confidence comes after you take action.

3. Bring What You Already Know

A new chapter doesn’t erase your experience.

You bring strengths, values, relationships, and lessons from everything you’ve already done.

If you’re starting a coaching business, marketing may be unfamiliar. But listening, building relationships, and helping people may already come naturally.

Ask yourself: What has helped me succeed before, and how can I bring that forward now?

4. Be Transparent

There’s something relaxing about saying, “This part is new for me. Here’s what I know, and here’s what I’m learning.”

You don’t have to share every private worry. Simply be honest about where you are.

That honesty can help someone else feel less alone. It also allows you to connect without the effort of appearing to have everything figured out.

5. Lean In

When things feel messy, it’s tempting to withdraw until you have a plan.

But this is when support can help most.

Keep the habits that nourish you. Make room for spiritual practices. Reach out to people who understand. Ask for help with one specific task — or ask someone to listen while you think things through.

When I moved homes, my sister Gretchen helped me sort through decisions and emotions. The movers transported my belongings. I needed both kinds of support!

You don’t have to know everything you need before you begin asking.

Whatever transition you’re navigating, bring your strengths, stay open to learning, and let people support you while you find your way.

What’s one step you’re ready to take toward your next chapter?

I’m cheering you on!

Exciting news!

I’m bringing my writing to a new home on Substack called Soul Driven with Kat Knecht. It’s a space for conversations about coaching, meaningful work, purpose, and the spiritual path.

You’ll be hearing more about this transition soon. For now, I invite you to read my latest article in its new home!
