How to Sustain Your Coaching Business When Life Happens

One of the biggest mistakes coaches make when setting goals is assuming life will cooperate.

At the beginning of the year, we’re energized.

We create vision boards, set intentions, map out goals, and commit to making things happen.

Then life happens.

A family member needs us. A move takes longer than expected. A new baby arrives. A health issue arises. A relationship changes. An unexpected opportunity appears.

Suddenly, the carefully crafted plan is competing with real life.

I’ve learned this lesson the hard way.

Early in my coaching career, I had built a successful practice. I had clients, a marketing system that was working, and enough confidence to leave a secure corporate job.

Then, within a short period of time, I went through a divorce, moved across the country, and was heartbroken by the death of my father.

Life happened.

What I didn’t understand at the time was that a business needs attention. When I stopped paying attention to my business, my business stopped growing.

Many of my clients moved on, and I found myself rebuilding almost from scratch.

The experience taught me a lesson I have never forgotten:

Success isn’t about creating a perfect plan.

Success is about creating a plan that can survive real life.

That’s where what I think of as practical magic comes in.

The practical part is having systems, structure, and a way to stay connected to your business even when your attention is pulled elsewhere. It means planning your year, your projects, and your priorities.

The magic part is allowing that plan to remain alive!

Instead of treating your plan like a rigid set of rules, think of it as a living conversation between your vision and your reality.

  • Plans can move.
  • Timelines can change.
  • Priorities can shift.

What matters is that you stay engaged!

One of the most helpful practices I’ve developed is creating planning systems that are flexible and creative. Whether it’s a vision board, a planning journal, a mind map, or even a simple collection of index cards, I want a way to see the bigger picture of my life and business at the same time.

Because the goal isn’t to control life. Right?

The goal is to remain connected to what matters while life unfolds

And perhaps the most important practice of all is making time to revisit your plan and check in with your own wisdom, intuition, what feels right now.

When you regularly review your vision, your goals, and your commitments, you create space for new ideas, fresh insights, and course corrections that keep you moving forward.

Sometimes the most productive action is taking a step forward.

Sometimes the most productive action is taking a step back.

The key is that the choice is intentional:

  • Keep your vision alive.
  • Stay connected to your business.
  • Adjust when life requires it.
  • And keep moving.

That is the practical magic of creating success in the real world.
