One of the most important lessons I’ve learned in building a coaching business is this:
You can’t skip stages.
You can try. I certainly have.
Early in my business, I jumped into exciting projects that looked fun and expansive. I wanted a radio show. I wanted beautiful branding. I wanted the polished pieces that I saw more established coaches using.
And while those things weren’t wrong, they were out of order.
The result?
They didn’t create the success I was hoping for.
Not because they were bad ideas, but because the foundation underneath them wasn’t ready yet.
That’s why understanding the four stages of a coaching business is so important. Each stage has its own purpose, its own lessons, and its own kind of growth.
The first stage is Coach-in-Training.
This is the season of learning, experimenting, and becoming a masterful coach. It’s a time to practice, explore what kind of clients you’re drawn to, and begin noticing the work that lights you up. Business building is iterative and will evolve over time. In this stage your main focus is becoming the coach you are here to be.
The second stage is Startup.
This is where the rubber meets the road. In this stage, you begin building the foundation of your business: your niche, message, website, consultation process, marketing plan, referral base, and systems. It can feel vulnerable and uncomfortable because you are stepping into the unknown. But this is also the stage where real traction begins.
This is where my Business Training Program supports coaches in building these foundational aspects so you can make money while learning to market your business your way.
The third stage is Sustainable Success.
This is the stage where your business begins to work consistently. You have regular clients, your marketing activities are bringing people in, and you can begin to count on your income. This is also where many coaches add group coaching, workshops, retreats, writing, or other offerings that expand their work in a sustainable way.
I love it when I see coaches arrive at this stage! It makes all the work worthwhile. A lifelong career as a coach has gone from a dream to reality.
The fourth stage is Legacy.
This stage is about the bigger picture. It may include a book, podcast, certification program, body of work, larger platform, or business structure that can continue beyond you.
But legacy doesn’t have to mean fame or thousands of followers. It simply means creating something that expresses your deeper purpose and leaves a meaningful impact.
The magic is that each stage builds on the one before it.
The practical part is knowing what stage you are in and taking the right next steps.
When coaches try to do Legacy stage work before they have a Startup foundation, it often leads to frustration, wasted energy, and a loss of confidence. This usually happens when they are in a business program or working with a business coach whose approach is beyond the stage that is right for them.
But when you honor the stage you’re in, everything begins to make more sense.
You stop comparing yourself to coaches who are farther along.
You stop trying to force strategies that aren’t right for your business yet.
You start asking a much more useful question: What is the next right step for this stage of my business?
That question can change everything.
Because a soul-driven coaching business is not built all at once.
It is built step by step.
Stage by stage.
With heart, strategy, patience, and trust.
That is the practical magic of growing a coaching business that truly lasts.
