In my book, Evolve Your Coaching Business, I recall a funny experience I had with a colleague who just didn’t get what coaching was about. It went like this.
One day shortly after I first began my coaching business, I was having lunch with an executive who was a big wig in the organization where I worked. We were sitting in a booth eating really bad food trying our best to make it through the day.
He casually asked me if I thought I was going to apply for a new position that had just opened up.
I told him that actually, I was planning to take off the golden handcuffs that had bound me to the Postal Service pretty soon to start my own business. I just couldn’t help myself. I was so excited about my new business that I started gushing about it.
I told him what coaching did for people. How I listened and how much I cared and that I just loved my clients.
He turned to me with a bite of fish on his fork and said, “That sounds like another profession, you know, the oldest profession there is. It sounds like you are selling love.” I sure didn’t like this at the time. It felt like a put-down and sexist to boot. But the truth is, our profession is different. Coaching is heart-based.
You are making a promise to potential clients that you will support what is in their hearts and help them achieve things they couldn’t do on their own. These achievements, the ones people tend to hire a coach for, are based in their hearts, not their heads.
It is for this reason that the marketing of a coach business can have a positive impact on others while building your business.
